How often to clean the oven, microwave and range hood (and how to do it fast)

By The HouseKiper team 路 Published 路 5 min read

A good rhythm is to clean the microwave every month and to deep-clean the oven and the range hood filters every three months, with a quick wipe after any spill in between. These three appliances collect grease, and grease that is left to build up burns, smells and is harder to remove each time. Short, regular sessions are faster than one big scrub once a year. Your appliance manual always has the last word on products and methods.

The routine at a glance

| Appliance | Quick clean | Deep clean | |---|---|---| | Microwave | wipe spills the same day | monthly | | Oven | wipe the door and spills when cool | every 3 months | | Range hood filters | not needed | every 3 months |

If you cook with a lot of oil, fry often or have a family that cooks every day, bring these forward. If you only reheat food, you can stretch them a little.

The microwave: monthly, in ten minutes

Food splatters turn into baked-on crust each time you heat something. The easiest way to loosen it:

  1. Put a microwave-safe bowl with water and a few slices of lemon or a spoon of vinegar inside.
  2. Heat it for a few minutes until the window steams up, then leave the door closed for five minutes.
  3. Carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot) and wipe the walls, ceiling and door with a cloth. The softened dirt comes off easily.
  4. Take out the turntable and wash it with dish soap. Wipe the door seal and the edges.

Do not run the microwave empty and do not use metal scourers on the inside. If you notice sparks, burn marks or a peeling interior surface, stop using it and ask for advice from the manufacturer or a technician.

The oven: every three months

Burnt-on grease is the biggest cause of smoke and bad smells when you cook. Options, from gentler to stronger:

  • Self-cleaning (pyrolytic or catalytic) ovens. Follow the manual. Remove racks and loose items first, ventilate the kitchen and keep pets away: the process produces strong fumes and high temperatures.
  • Manual cleaning with a paste. Mix baking soda with a little water, spread it on the cool interior (avoiding heating elements and the fan), leave it overnight and wipe it off with a damp cloth.
  • Commercial oven cleaner. Use gloves, ventilate and follow the label. Do not use it on surfaces the manufacturer forbids.

In all cases: switch the oven off and let it cool completely first, remove the racks and trays and soak them in hot soapy water, and clean the door glass last. Never mix cleaning products. If you have a gas oven, do not poke into the burner or the gas connections; if you smell gas, leave the area, open the windows and call the gas emergency number.

The range hood filters: every three months

The metal grease filter is where the cooking grease ends up. Clogged, it removes less air and can become a fire hazard, so this task is more important than it looks.

  1. Switch the hood off. Let the light cool down if the filter sits under a lamp.
  2. Take the filter out. Most unclip or slide out; the manual shows how.
  3. Soak it in very hot water with dish soap or a degreaser, brush it and rinse well. Many metal filters can go in the dishwasher, but check first.
  4. Dry it completely before putting it back.

Charcoal (recirculating) filters cannot be washed and must be replaced when the manufacturer says so. Also wipe the underside and the visible parts of the hood while the filter is out. Do not work on the wiring or the motor: if the hood is noisy or weak, call a technician.

The quick-clean habit that makes it all easier

  • Wipe the oven door and any spills once the oven is cool, not days later.
  • Cover dishes that may bubble over, or put a tray on the shelf below.
  • Wipe the microwave with a damp cloth after each use if it splatters.
  • While you are in the kitchen, run through the other recurring jobs: the kitchen drain and the dishwasher.

One list for all of it

It is easy to remember to clean the microwave and forget the hood filter for two years. HouseKiper puts each one on its own calendar so you get reminded when it is due. You can see the kitchen tasks in the complete home maintenance checklist, and if you are moving out, the move-out cleaning checklist puts them in order.

How often should I deep-clean my oven?

About every three months for normal use, and sooner if you roast or cook greasy food often. Wipe spills once the oven has cooled.

How often should I clean the microwave?

Monthly is a good rhythm, and wipe up any splatter the same day. Steaming a bowl of water with lemon first makes it much easier.

How often should I clean the range hood filter?

Every three months for metal filters, more often if you fry a lot. Charcoal filters cannot be washed: replace them when the manufacturer says so.

Can I put the range hood filter in the dishwasher?

Many metal filters can, but not all. Check the manual before doing it.
